Don’t Let False Beliefs Stand In the Way

There is a particular quote that recently had a profound impact on my life.

“It’s never too late to become the person you might have been.” George Eliot

I first read that quote while waiting for my son in parent pick-up line and for some reason right there it made me begin crying. It was not until I chewed on that quote and asked God why it spoke to me so much that the Lord began to shed light on some beliefs I held that were affecting my walk with Christ.

I believe it was this quote that helped me step out of my comfort zone and into public speaking. Here are some of the false beliefs I had; just maybe you struggle with something similar.

    1. I am almost 40 (and even though I am not old) it is too late to “begin” anything new in life. If God wanted to really use me, it would have started when I was younger. (BIG LIE)
    2. Even though my husband is my biggest supporter, God can’t use me because he is not as active in church. (BIG LIE- God can work through and use anything)
    3. The people, who know me, don’t really believe in me or support me. (BIG LIE – some of the people who I never thought would be my support systems have humbled me with their words and kindness).

My problem was, I was to busy focusing on the people who did not support me or offer words of encouragement. It is the old saying, you can have 100 compliments, but you will focus on the one that is critical. God had to smack me upside the head and remind me: Hey Lori, remember the “I can do all things….” That literally means ALL THINGS.

    1. God reminded me I needed to focus on what HE SAYS, not what others say (good and bad).
    2. Realize God can work through ALL situations.
    3. God is the God of open doors and closed doors.
    4. God does not care how old you are when it comes to using you or doing a “new thing.” Isaiah 43:19 (scroll mouse over passage and the verse pops up)

So if life did not turn out exactly how you planned and if you are not serving the Lord how you thought you would be. Guess what:

  • Loved that George Eliot quote and just sent it to someone who needs to hear it. Thanks for sharing your journey with speaking. I've been wanting to go out of my comfort zone and speak and have done some, but it's hard to overcome those negative voices, like you said. Your story really encourages me.
  • Wow Lori, this is amazing! I've listened to similar voices in my head in the past too. And they're all lies! God can use you and He can use me. Amen to that. I think you are very precious and a good friend. You have special gifts and Kingdom assignments that God has specifically for you. We need to forgot about our comfort zones and allow the Lord to work in and through us.
  • I loved your post. That quote should speak to me too! I'm 50 years old, and still haven't figured out exactly what God's plan for my life is. I guess another quote that this one reminds me of, is one that my mother used to tell us when we said we didn't know how to do something....she'd say, "Well, you can't learn any YOUNGER!" How true.
