Why I blog and Other Goodies

Blog is defined as a mixture of what is happening in a person’s life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.

When I read this definition it kind of sounds self serving. And in some respect, for many of us when we began to blog, that was our original thought. Most of us enjoyed the journaling aspect to journal family events or funny occurrences along the way. What many of us bloggers, who have been blogging for some time, found out by accident is that it is not about us. Yes we blog to journal our family events, but there is so much more.

I am speaking only for myself, but I think others may agree.

Our heart strings become tied to others we may never meet face to face this side of heaven.

There are ones we are honored to be able to pray for. There are others who have become close friends. Some bloggers you go to for humor, some you go to for a serious thought, some for updated world events, and others just to check in and say hi “I’m thinking about you.” Whatever the purpose, they all become part of your life. And those of you who think online blogger friendship is fake, well I share my opinion on that with this post Are They Real or Are They Fake.

This award Janeen gave me got me thinking about all the different bloggers I visit. Each blogger is very different, each offering their own view on life, many I visit have different views then what I have, but this is what I love about the blogging community.  Or maybe it is just my love of news and being in everyone’s business.  Whatever the case, I love blogging, I love writing, but more importantly I love all the people I am able to learn from and connect with.

And Janeen is one of these people.  Thank you so much for this award I will display it on my About Page proudly =)

Also if you link to me on your blog let me know.  I have added a section of “Reading Suggestions” every time my paged is refreshed it displays 6 new blogs (cycling through the list).  So if you link to me I will add you to the “Reading Suggestions” list.

Have a great Monday!

  • You're very welcome to the award; I'll be honored that you display it on your page.

This post is beautiful; I'm blessed to have read it.
  • Laurel, I feel like I have written a similar post before. I think something missing from that definition of blogging is that it is about relationships. I, too, visit a variety of blogs. Many of them we have some in common and some NOT in common. It really has stretched me and made me a better person to know all these people and try to see from their point of view.

    Great post!

  • I recently went through a phase where I thought I wanted to give up blogging, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I would miss it too much.
After receiving such heartwarming comments on the post I wrote last night, I have realized that blogging is something I never want to lose sight of. Every post is like going out to coffee with some of my best girlfriends. It is great therapy!
    So glad you blog!

  • Absolutely *love* blogging and love the friends I've made here.

Lysa TerKeurst recently asked in one of her posts why we blog. When I first started blogging, I used it as a journal. I wrote down some pretty personal thoughts, which have since been deleted. I quit for a few years, and then began blogging because God placed it on my heart to use this as a place to try and bring people closer to Him through sharing His Word and what I thought about it - as a form of encouragement and inspiration. God has given me a desire to write, and this just seemed like the right forum to do it in. I love sharing what's on my mind regarding God! I do throw in a smattering of personal things, like pictures of the Grands and funny things from time to time...but mostly my blogging is Christ-centered.

I read blogs for encouragement, inspiration and wisdom from other women who are far more knowledgeable than I! I love reading what's on people's hearts, whether it's a word from God or a book review or something hilarious.

I'm so happy to have found your blog, which I added to my sidebar a few days ago, too.

  • Blogging has become such a blessing to me. It started when I focused on learning all about social media to help my husband with his company. Between twitter, social networks and blogging ...it's opened up a whole new world that I otherwise may not have experienced. For me, the two best things about blogging are meeting new friends (that includes YOU) and developing and improving my writing skills. Oh yeah, and it is also helping Greg.

On Heart Choices, I link to your blog as one of my favorites. I've encouraged some of my friends to visit you as well. I think you deserve your award. Congratulations! You've always been so accessible and helpful to me and I appreciate your friendship. I look forward to the day when we meet in person. Maybe next time you visit your family in Arizona. I can't wait!

  • You've said it so well Laurel. I've been "pondering" my reasons for blogging lately too. It really has become so much more that I ever envisioned. It is a blessing in my life I am very thankful for.
  • KM
    I love blogging too.

Many friends i made through this blogsphere COME and GO....but there are also some that stay and these are true friends whom had been with me thick and thin....when Dot was sick, when my mum passed away and many many more....then of course, my happy moments when i clinched business deals, on special occasions.

Not forgetting some annoying ones whom spam in my comment box tricking me to click on their link and be referred to a commercial site! HOW ANNOYING IS THAT!!

    Have a great week ahead!
