A Love That Lasts a Lifetime

holding handsTraveling always has its adventures, but also its treasures. When I was first heading out of Orlando my plane was stopped on the runway because there was a back up of planes in North Carolina (my layover). At first I was not worried, but when I realized we had been sitting there for almost 30 mins and my layover was only one hour.  I began praying frantically and  texting my Mom to begin praying.

We finally took off and I was trying to get comfortable. I pulled out my bible study bible because I have been preparing for a speaking engagement I have coming up. There was no one in the middle seat but sitting by me in the isle seat was a sweet older gentleman. He leaned over and said, “Are you a college student going to seminary?”

Ok my first thought was jumping out my seat to hug him for mistaking me as a college student, but I promise I was proper and told him no I was preparing for a speaking engagement.

People if you ever want to start a conversation about God, many times you don’t have to say anything, just pull out your bible. He shared with me about his churches (he is a snowbird and lives in two different parts of the US depending on the weather). He knew my home town so we chatted about where we attended and the various charity work he has been involved in. The sweetest thing happened (mind you he was traveling alone), he asked me if I wanted to see a picture of his wife. I replied, I would love to!

This 75 year old man pulled out his wallet and proceeded to share with me his beautiful, treasured wife. I heard his words while he was speaking, but in my mind God was blessing my heart to hear his story. Oh times were not always good he said, they raised their children, and he himself was from a family of 17! But now they are enjoying retirement and you could just see the love he had for his wife.

I arrived at my layover destination in North Carolina and had 10 mins to spare to get on my second flight, we said quick goodbyes and ran to our connecting flights.  I had 10 mins to make my plane, fortunately the gates were next to each other (praise Jesus).

I did not get much studying done during that flight, but I praise God I got my bible out and heard one of the sweetest stories of marriage.

More about my trip to come….

  1. Oh what a touching story. How beautiful is the love between that sweet man and his bride. God was so thoughtful in blessing you with sitting close to that dear soul.

  2. What a sweet, wonderful story! I love hearing “love stories” of how people came together, but I love even more hearing from those whose love has grown and endured for many years.

  3. Oh, Lori, how awesome that you had a chance to talk to this man about his marriage. I love hearing sweet stories like this :) And you are right – if you pull out your Bible, especially traveling alone, you soon will be involved in a conversation :) Thank you for sharing this story with us.
