Are You Considered Young?

by Lori

While being on the subject of “acting old,” I better watch out or my boys will be selecting a home for me soon. My two older boys and I were on our way to Wednesday night church listening to the local Christian radio station. This particular radio station hosts a “Family Name Game.” If your child has the selected name of the day, then you can call up and brag on your child. This particular winner said her child was a “young man” of the age of 27.

My boys (both of them) blurted out, “that is not a YOUNG man.” They proceeded to inform me a young man is someone in their late teens. I was shocked by this sudden revelation and told them I was going to ask them when they are 27 if they are a “young” man. They continued to argue about the term “young man” being applied to a 27 year old. I then asked, “Well what do you think I am?” They wisely paused (knowing they could be entering dangerous waters) and then responded, “An adult.”

At least they did not say “MATURE adult.” But I quickly realized, I need to be careful; they may be selecting our “home” as soon as I reach the ripe age of 40 here in a few years.

Okay okay how young you are is in the mind. A few years ago my father was relating to someone that he had cut this older ladies grass as she lived alone. Mom looked at him and asked how old did he think she was, with a puzzled look Dad replied that he didn't know. We all had a good laugh when she replied she's younger than you. My Dad was in his early 80's at the time. He is 90 this year and getting frailer but still lives in the family home with a care provider who does meals and laundry etc.
  • i just want to know how you got my face in cartoon! heehee
  • Well, I guess I would categorize 27 as just plain adult.

I think people who are 27 certainly don't want to be "kids."

I don't know about "old" though. I play it safe and save that term for 70 and up!

What is up with boys? My son told me last night, I'm a half a decade away from half a century. This was after we finished my birthday dinner. Good thing he didn't say it before I took him out to eat. haha
  • HA! I guess i am finally old at the age of 27! Everyone is always telling me i'm the baby, but i guess in the eyes on my nephews i'm just the opposite :) Woo Hoo!

  • Oh Sweetie,

According to my calculations when I was your kids age, I shouldn't even be breathing right now!! I am amazed to say that I grow younger in heart as I get older and wiser. My sons who are 37 now, are starting to get aches and pains where they never thought possible. Grey Hairs too:) I just kinda smile and empathize with them as I realize that everything comes full circle in time. It is funny though isn't it? I am only middle age at 60 now. My timeline has really been pushed forward in my mind. Love your post AND your kids. Just wait:)

    Love and Hugs, Laurie

  • It's all a matter of perspective! I still feel young in heart but the mirror tells a different story. I think back when I was a child and I thought my parents were old. And when I look at the pictures, they were actually young or at least as I see it now.
