Would like your advice, manly man and I are planning a trip to Charleston, SC in June. I know only crazy people go there in June, but I figure it is hot in Florida then too (so it is either stay home and be hot or go some where new and be hot).We are interested in staying in the historical area, we will have a car, but don’t want to do a lot of driving.
So anyone been there, anyone live there? Pass on suggestions!! I doubt we can afford the very high end resorts, more middle. I am looking at some of the bed and breakfast places.
Suggestions on nice places to say, nice places to visit? “Oh don’t miss this” type of thing. Unfortunately we will be arriving right after the Spoleto Festival, so that is already crossed off.
I would love to hear what you have to say =)

I’ve never been there but would love to make an ADULT trip there….maybe a girl trip would be nice. Anyway, when you go would you please go by TradeMark Properties and get autographs of the people who used to be the cast of Flip That House? I love Richard, his brother, Dawn and Ginger’s dog but not crazy about Ginger herself!
Sorry that’s my only insight into Charleston!
Have fun and you can tell me where all I need to go when I get to go!
Hi Laurel, my husband was stationed in Charleston for several years while in the Navy. I’ll get some insight from him when he gets home from work and post it. He was there before I knew him. He was there when Hurricane Hugo hit, in fact, he had to ride it out on the ship while tied to dock…
I’ve been there twice and love it! We stayed at a hotel right on Folly Beach — a Holiday Inn, I think. It was a bit more pricey, but we felt it was worth it to be right there — whoever in the family wanted to could go down whenever without having to pack up and make a big expedition. My husband loved going out on the beach first thing in the morning. We went one year in April when our kids’ school break was a different week than the rest of the city, so it wasn’t busy at all. I don’t know what it would be like in the summer.
Definitely take one of the carriage tours, where you ride around in the horse-drawn carriage and the guide tells you interesting tidbits about the town and the homes. You see some of the most gorgeous houses that way.
We also went on the aircraft carrier (the Yorktown, I think?) and submarine near it. I learned I would be too claustrophobic to live in a submarine for any length of time! There was also a little boat tour of the harbor there that was nice.
You’ll love it, whatever you do.
My husband and I went last Sept – we actually spent a day in Charleston (stayed in Myrtle Beach for a week). One great place to eat in Charleston is Poogan’s Porch. They have the BEST food and you will love the atmosphere of the home-turned-restaurant. Perfect for lunch or dinner!
It’s in the South. You’re going to be warm wherever you go. To me, that’s the ideal getaway…
Congrats on your trip and I hope you get lots of great input.
I can’t help you, Laurel. Never been there. But lucky you that you get to go there. I can’t wait to hear all about it and I agree with you, it’s hot everywhere in June. Might as well go somewhere new and exciting to be hot!
ONE OF MY MOST FAVORITE PLACES IN THE WORLD! We go EVERY year!!! Although we vacation about 45 minutes away (Kiawah), we always make a trek or two in to Charleston.
You will LOVE seeing the people, mostly women, weaving sweetgrass baskets; they’re AMAZING!! (the weavers AND the baskets). Note in advance, they’re pricetag is STEEP…don’t pass out when you find out the cost. You’ll see them when you stroll the Market, it’s on the Battery and it’s a must-see.
For good ol’ fried food, Hyman’s is an instition; it’s family owned and one of the owners always stops by our table to check on things. Their crispy flounder is YUM, but also, we always get a basket of okra…weird, but delish. Jestine’s Kitchen is ALSO an instution, home-cookin’ done RIGHT! The Boathouse is one of our perennial favorites, it’s not high-end (but not cheap, either). Anson’s and Magnolia’s are nicer, high-end places. Kiminsky’s has GREAT desserts, and if you venture into Mt. Pleasant or Sullivan’s Island you have even more choices.
We’ve stayed in the Omni (at Charleston Place, where retail shops are), but I think it’s changed names now. I wouldn’t recommend it b/c the rooms were SMALL. We stayed in a Hampton Inn once, and it was designed in keeping with downtown. It EXCEEDED our expectations (it was new, clean, and we had a two-story townhouse room!). You might want to roll the dice on pricelining a room; if you put in the max # of stars, you’ll get something very nice. Just be sure to put in at least 4 stars if you choose to do that.
You’ll love your visit, and I agree, a carriage ride/tour will be WORTH it! There’s soooo much history there. My personal history, too…Dimitre’s Jewler’s is where my hubby bought my engagement ring a thousand years ago (behind Charleston Place I think on King Street–it’s still there
).
HAVE FUN! CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR @ YORU TRIP!
We visited Charleston several years ago. It is wonderful. I want to go again some time. We stayed in a hotel outside of the city – nothing very exciting. But the city is beautiful. We loved just walking along the streets and looking at the beautiful houses. We visited a Plantation house, walked on a lovely beach and visited Fort Sumnter. They have an amazing seafood restaurant there in the heart of the city. I wish I could remember names, but I’m sure you’ll find lots of things to do. It is just lovely.
I went to Charleston about 15 years ago. A carriage ride through the older part of town is nice. You can look at the older homes then. A trip to the market is an essential. It will definitely be hot in June, so plan for that with the right clothing, water, etc. Have fun!
Sorry – never been to much on the East Coast. Only in Connecticut.
Ok, I asked him and he said that Battery Park downtown is nice. Take a boat out to visit Ft. Sumter – where the Civil War started. He said there is a big Plantation in Charleston but hasn’t visited it. I don’t think he is awake yet to answer my questions. If he comes up with more, I’ll let you know
We were in Chaleston, SC about 18 most ago. We did the carriage tour through the historic area (beautiful stately homes), ate lots of seafood and loved learning the civil war history. We also visited the Isle of Palms (long gorgeous beaches). You’ll love it!
BTW, I feel positively “spa-ed visiting here.” Cute post. :~)
Oh, my word … the seafood there is delicious! Enjoy your time there, and take lots of pictures. Oh, and dress in as little as decently possible. Wet heat. Yuck.
Thanks for stopping by!
Beautiful website! My husband’s been there and told me how beautiful it is!!
Blessings,
Anna
