They Call it a Herbst, I Call it Torture

That wonderful contraption is what my middle son had implanted in his mouth on Monday. Poor guy is having to only eat REALLY soft foods for the next week and he is feeling the painful affects of this appliance. The things we go through to have decent looking teeth, huh? Poor baby. I fear today (Tuesday) will be worse for him as he learns to adjust. This contraption will be with him for the next year. I told him to look on the bright side, he will be done by the time he enters high school (he is now in 7th).

Today was one of those days where I asked the Lord, “Are you sure I have what it takes to be a mother of all boys?” I am at the stage where emotions go up and down as quick as the weather. Even they don’t know what to do with all the testosterone they have going on. One minute everyone is happily playing in the living room, the next moment fist fights break out in a heartbeat. And no we don’t allow fist fights, but it is kind of like outlawing guns and having your two year still say “pow-pow” with their fork. It is inevitable.

I have tried to proclaim that since I am the only female here, I am the only one allowed to have fluctuating emotions. I guess they did not listen. I do enjoy watching them sometimes, boys are definitely their own breed. I was at the grocery store a few nights ago and turned around to see my youngest son trying to “weigh” his arm muscle in one of the veggie scales.

Even on days like Monday where I begin to doubt if I have the stuff “boy mom’s” are made of, they still make me smile. Like right now, my oldest asked his brother if his mouth hurt and middle son nodded. Oldest son said, “Cool, wanna throw the football?” The mother in me wants to say “Watch out for his mouth!” But I know this is how they are there for each other.

On two unrelated notes:

  1. Oh, dear…. I had a similar sort of contraption when I was around 6th or 7th grade, too. He will survive, as I did, but oh, how I remember those days of discomfort and pain…. all in the name of pretty teeth! :)

I’ll say a prayer for you both!

  2. I too am truly baffled at how to raise my all boy household right now too. This tween/teen thing is tough. Everyone says it is worse to have girls but at least I could relate to girls. Sometimes my boys seem like creatures from an entirely different planet (that I never want to visit LOL) Praying over them and a sense of humor (and thick skin) is what gets me through :-)

  3. That does look like a painful contraption. Our grands are in various “styles” of braces right now too. I wonder that they can possibly eat with all that hardware in their mouths, but they manage :-)

I think you’re a wonderful Mom of boys. As far as I can see you’re doing a super job Lori.

  4. Ouch! That thing looks painful, Lori. Poor thing – he’s going to be uncomfortable for a while, and let me guess. He’ll have to go occasionally for adjustments, too, right? Mandy had to wear a Jones Jig in the roof of her mouth for a year, and she suffered. She has a gorgeous smile now, but she sure went through a lot to get it.

It makes me smile when you describe life with your all boy family. And I personally think you’re handling it just fine.

  5. FIrst of all, that is just hilarious about the scale at the grocery store.

I have to say that I have never heard of such a contraption. I’m sure it is not fun.

  6. Let me say I can relate! My son had the exact same appliance a few years ago. I hope it encourages you to know that (at least for him) once the initial pain and awkwardness of it was past, it wasn’t so bad. No adjustments or anything required during the year.

Believe me, my mother’s heart is cringing with you as I just brought that same boy of mine home from the Ortho today with a new adjustment to his braces that he now has. They said this will be the toughest and most painful adjustment yet and we’ve had them in since July.

I’ve got liquid ibuprofen, jello, pudding, and an array of other soft foods on hand for the occasion. How about you?

    Oh… I am so sorry!!….

  7. I remember when they told me I had a boy. I had a momentary sense of absolute panic. What on earth do you do with a boy? LOL.

Your son cracked me up weighing his arm muscle. Yup. He’s a boy.

Hope your son’s mouth feels better soon and he can get back to eating real food.

  8. My oldest two had the Herbst devices, and I did feel I was torturing them when I had to turn the little crank every day. Hopefully he’ll adjust soon. When we look back on their “before” pictures, it was definitely worth it (they think so, too).

I remember being a little surprised that boys definitely have “moods,” too.
