Since we are already on the topic of basketball. I have to say this weekend was an exciting basketball weekend and it has nothing to do with Northern Ohio upsetting the number one seed Kansas in the second round.
Even though that did make me a bit giddy watching it while eating at Outback Steak House this weekend.
Nope that was not the exciting news. But before I share more let me make a side note…
Our Youth Minister and many, many, many helpers worked their booty off this weekend. Every year our church has a weekend retreat called Discipleship Now (or D-Now) for all the middle school and high school students. They have a guest speaker visit, along with a guest band. The kids start it off with a banquet on Thursday night and then come Friday they are dropped off and parents do not see them again until Sunday morning. First off all I am proud of the ministry staff we have at church and I could not say enough nice stuff, but the most important thing is…they allow God to use them as a vessel.
Amen.
Ok….. you would think because we dropped off our kids on Friday, hubby and I did the happy dance and spent the weekend rejoicing.
Except we didn’t.
Nope, as it has been said before, “we are a basketball family.”
My youngest son had basketball try-outs for his middle school team on Friday, the coach said he will give 18 kids a call Friday night to let them know if they made the first cut. Since my son was at D-Now having a great time, hubby and I stayed home to see if we got “the call.”
Well we did.
We did not know if the coach was going to place any 6th graders on the middle school team, so we were excited he made the first cut.
This meant my husband had to get up at 7am, pick up my son (who was sleeping at a Host family’s home for their retreat weekend) by 7:30 am—I am sure after my son stayed up really late and consumed large quantities of sugar—and take him to his basketball try-outs. According to my husband my son did real well and when he was done we dropped him back off at church to continue his weekend learning more about God and having a blast doing so.
You would then think we would have a free day after try-outs.
Nope. No kids and we are still running, what is up with that!
But the team my husband coaches (high school boys) had a game at 2pm that afternoon. It was a big game for them, many of the kids on my husband’s team were on the high school JV Basketball team and they were playing against kids who were mostly on the varsity team. The thought going into the game was they were going to lose, but they wanted to win really bad. My oldest son and one of his friends left the D-Now weekend to play this game. It was an intense game and my son’s team played hard, but they ended up losing by—I believe it was 4 points.
Then one of the teenagers that is coaching my youngest son in a different league was at Discipleship Now, my husband filled in as a coach for him so he could attend.
I say all this to say….even without my teenagers home we are running ourselves around to various games.
Goodness!!
This is where we insert wife complaining we cannot even have one weekend without basketball. I do admit I actually did say that because I would love a weekend with my husband by myself, but I know anyone who knows us is laughing at that comment. It is March Madness so if it was not coaching it would have been watching basketball.
We did finally get a night out for dinner at Outback, as I mentioned earlier and watched the Kansas upset.
Both of us anxiously wondering if our youngest son would make the middle school basketball team. Many coaches do not pick 6th graders, they only select 7th and 8th graders. It is completely up to the coach. As I mentioned here in #6, I am worrying about dealing with a son’s broken heart (he really wanted this).
I say all that to say, this weekend was an exciting basketball weekend……
Can you tell I am one proud Momma. My middle son has his try-outs this week at his school and since he is an 8th grader he has a very, very good chance of making the team. This will mean I have two sons on two different teams, who will be playing against each other. YiYiYiYi….
