The New Facebook

If you have not logged into Facebook recently, you may notice things have changed when you do.  When you first sign on the News Feed is shown first so you can catch up on things quickly.  Facebook hopes this makes it easier for you to see what is important before you see everyone’s updates.

Then on the top you will see Live Feed.  Live Feed is the most recent updates from all your Facebook friends.  This shows you everything.  What I love is that birthday’s will also be included in LIVE FEED.  I have felt like a bad Facebook friend because I did not know how everyone kept up with all their “friends” birthdays.

Now one thing you may want to change, and if you are MY Facebook friend you already saw this, but by default Facebook will only show you 250 of your friends.  So if you have over 250 friends you will miss some of your friends updates.  The good news is you can change this setting.

How To Change Settings:

First Click Home (even if you are on Home, click it again to refresh)

Then click Live Feed

Scroll down to the bottom where it says EDIT OPTIONS (it is on the same line where it says OLDER POSTS)

1

Select EDIT OPTIONS and you will see a box

2

Put a large number in there (any number!)

I think this change will be a good change, it is just hard getting use to something new.  If you have any questions let me know!

Want To Know My Secrets?

This is a geeky blog post, so if you are looking for spiritual insight with this one you may want to move along.  But if you are like me and have just a bit of a geeky side when it comes to computers I am going to let you in on some of my secrets.

Many times I hear, Lori I love how you are up to date with new computer information! Well if you are like me and have an “inner-geek” (or some of my friends in real life might say I have an ‘outter-geek’ also) I am going to tell you how YOU can stay up to date also.

    1. Read blogs by people who are smarter than you.  I read Darren Rowse’s Problogger web site.  Majority of those people are smarter and know what they are doing, so I read and glean new information I can implement.  Now there is a Problogger Community where I can actually post questions and ask, “What the heck did Darren mean by this?” And people smarter than me lay it out in layman’s terms. (SIDE NOTE: if you ever wanted to join Problogger Community, now would be the time, he is raising the prices in about a week. If you get in now your price will be set. Right now it is $1.95 per month. And I don’t get a dime for telling you this. ;) )

    2. I read blogs like Lifehacker which gives you information from great Wallpaper roundup, cleaner sinks, to Windows Task Manager Alternatives (which begins to go over my head). But they have something for EVERYONE!

    3. With Download Squad, I find out what is new.  I find many of my new gadgets and toys here. Like Adobe Photo Uploader for Facebook, 10 best online color tools, and 14 Firefox Addons.

    4. Last by not least when I am feeling really geeky Slashdot Stories fills me in on some of the off-beat news (their tag line fits me: News for Nerds).  Information that is interesting for my own curiosity.  Like: Italian Scientists Put Robot Spiders In Your Colon, Newly Described Type of Cloud, and New Graphical Representation of the Periodic Table.

Oh and I love one of the news stories they have today: Doing Internet Searches Boosts Older Brains. (Google is good for your health? Who would have thought?? ;) I have visions of assisted living homes set up with computers so their residents can do “online searches.” ha! )

Now that I have let the proverbial cat out of the bag of  HOW geeky I am, do you have any sites you read to keep up-to-date for information?  Would love to know I am not the only geek out there, ha!

5 Reasons Why I am Loving Windows Live Writer

I have been hanging out on Darren Rowse’s (author of 31 Days to build a Better Blog) new Problogger.com Community and I read how many people were writing their blog posts on Windows Live Writer. I had heard of Window’s Live Writer but never gave it a second thought, but after hearing some great reviews I decided to give it a try.

Below are 5 things I have loved so far:

I was just shown this links if you do use Live Writer http://gallery.live.com/

1. You type your post on a page that looks like a Microsoft Word Document, but It allows you to manage multiple blogs, preview posts, and posts your post for you. You can even set a publish date for a future date and designate categories all inside Windows Live Writer.

2. Windows Live Writer makes inserting photos into a post easy.  There are also some plugins you can download so you can access photos on Flickr.  Once you insert the picture, Windows Live Writer allows you to modify size, borders and apply graphics. (see example below)

This colorizing and frame was all done inside Windows Live Writer.

The rounded corners, the watermark were all completed inside Windows Live Writer.

Ok you can say it…THAT IS COOL!

3. Not that I use this feature that much, but it is still  VERY cool.  It allows you to insert a map very easily.

Ok once again…OOOO AHHHH!

4. Windows Live Writer works with other weblogs including Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress (and many others). Need I say more?

5. Lastly if you are like me, once you sign on to the internet you become distracted easily, Windows Live Writer is easy to start up and allows you to complete your posts without the additional distractions.

No they did not pay me to write this, but dang they should have! ha!
