Want To Know My Secrets?

Inner Geek

This is a geeky blog post, so if you are looking for spiritual insight with this one you may want to move along.  But if you are like me and have just a bit of a geeky side when it comes to computers I am going to let you in on some of my secrets.

Many times I hear, Lori I love how you are up to date with new computer information! Well if you are like me and have an “inner-geek” (or some of my friends in real life might say I have an ‘outter-geek’ also) I am going to tell you how YOU can stay up to date also.

    1. Read blogs by people who are smarter than you.  I read Darren Rowse’s Problogger web site.  Majority of those people are smarter and know what they are doing, so I read and glean new information I can implement.  Now there is a Problogger Community where I can actually post questions and ask, “What the heck did Darren mean by this?” And people smarter than me lay it out in layman’s terms. (SIDE NOTE: if you ever wanted to join Problogger Community, now would be the time, he is raising the prices in about a week. If you get in now your price will be set. Right now it is $1.95 per month. And I don’t get a dime for telling you this. ;) )

    2. I read blogs like Lifehacker which gives you information from great Wallpaper roundup, cleaner sinks, to Windows Task Manager Alternatives (which begins to go over my head). But they have something for EVERYONE!

    3. With Download Squad, I find out what is new.  I find many of my new gadgets and toys here. Like Adobe Photo Uploader for Facebook, 10 best online color tools, and 14 Firefox Addons.

    4. Last by not least when I am feeling really geeky Slashdot Stories fills me in on some of the off-beat news (their tag line fits me: News for Nerds).  Information that is interesting for my own curiosity.  Like: Italian Scientists Put Robot Spiders In Your Colon, Newly Described Type of Cloud, and New Graphical Representation of the Periodic Table.

Oh and I love one of the news stories they have today: Doing Internet Searches Boosts Older Brains. (Google is good for your health? Who would have thought?? ;) I have visions of assisted living homes set up with computers so their residents can do “online searches.” ha! )

Now that I have let the proverbial cat out of the bag of  HOW geeky I am, do you have any sites you read to keep up-to-date for information?  Would love to know I am not the only geek out there, ha!

  • Hey Lori,

This is my first visit here and I see that we have a lot of geekiness in common. I mean anytime you find two people that are not professional chemist getting excited about a "new graphical representaion of the periodic table" it's just a little scary.

I keep up to date with Lisa Irby's site http://blog.2createawebsite.com/. If you have ever watched any of Darren's YouTube videos, check Lisa out. She is a natural in front of the camera and she's very down to earth (I think Darren is one of her mentors).

I'm sure I will be stopping by again to share some more geeky stories with you.

    Thanks for the post. Cheers!

    @Ileane
  • Thanks so much for stopping by, from one geek to another. I will ck Lisa's
    site out. Thanks.
  • You are too funny, Lori...I guess that is why I come to you when I have a 'geeky' question  ...

Well, I try keep update on photography (the little time I have left in my days)... So I keep up to-date on DPS - I think it is the same Darren Rowse who keeps you updated on your stuff. I read DPS daily and my list of photography 'would-like-to-have' gets longer very single day :) - I like the site because world-class photographers share their secrets with us wanna-be's ...
  • Good post...I don't read a lot of stuff 'cause I get frustrated at sorting through what I do understand and all of the stuff I don't understand! Wish I could hire an interpreter!
  • About as geeky as I get is coming over here and learning the latest, most coolest geekiness from you dear friend! LOL

    Hope you're feeling better.
  • Now I know that is not true, you are usually "up" on things. I have learned
a thing or two from you. =)) But it is good to know I bring out your "inner
    geek." ha!
